My ex once called me crazy — not in a kind way, he was really angry — because I spent eight weeks in Portugal and only went to the beach after two or three weeks. When he joined me after four, and I told him about my time there, he just couldn’t understand. It was January on the Atlantic coast. I lived on a cliff, with nothing but the ocean below and a fisherman in the village. Every morning began with coffee on my terrace, the sea roaring beneath me. And I watched, and I watched, and I watched the waves, until I got lost in their scents and voices. I read, I wrote, I played ukulele. That was enough. Now in Balat, lying in a hammock above the Golden Horn, I feel the same freedom. Vacation doesn’t mean running, or doing. Sometimes, just being me is enough vacation. And now I feel better. And now I can sleep, bc I can say to myself, yeah, you are good as you are, and that‘s the most honest result, you could got from that day. It‘s okay.
